Thank you for sharing this interesting article on the New York High Line. Whilst the High Line is one of the most popular and successful tourist developments in recent years, a new cultural riverside linear park, the Tide, is set to open in London summer this year (Greenwich Peninsula, 2019). Located in Greenwich Peninsula and is running along the Thames, the Tide is a 9-metres elevated high walkway that offers outdoor cultural experiences for the locals and the tourists. This includes a collection of public arts, giant sculptures, street furniture, gardens etc. within the riverside park.

With the artistic and landscape-led approaches, the project is set to revitalise the area and to open up the river in the heart of the city. It brings people together, with art and space to enjoy and relax. This is especially important in a high-density environment, where there is often a lack of private amenity space. The high-quality public park would allow people to interact, arts to inspire, space to a ‘temporary escape’ and landscaped trails to stay healthy. There are also potentials to hold festivals and boost economic activities alongside footfalls for the surrounding areas.

First Phase of the Tide (Testado, 2019)

Despite the lack of available space within a city, it is imperative to have sufficient parks and open spaces for the wellbeing of the residents, which the benefits would outweigh the associated costs in the long term. There are also different ways to ‘reclaim’ land within the city, which I have previously discussed on a separate post.
